Black Whisperwings
Smoke-dark, sharply veined aerial scavengers of cities and villages, the Black Whisperwings are smaller and rougher than their forest-dwelling kin, with angular bodies built for weaving through narrow alleys and collapsing rooftops. They nest in chimneys, loose tiles, and forgotten crevices, rising at dusk in chittering flocks to scour every unguarded surface for food. Where they gather, disorder is never far behind.
Key traits
- Smoke-dark fine feathers and sharply veined wings that catch dim light like scorched parchment; a dull crimson beak juts beneath a jagged dark crest.
- Thin, angular bodies and wiry, crooked claws are adapted specifically for navigating tight urban spaces: narrow alleys, eaves, and collapsing rooftops.
- Flight is erratic, jerking and lunging through the air rather than gliding; this irregular movement pattern makes them difficult to track or intercept.
- Bold urban thieves that snatch food and small objects from unguarded surfaces, vanishing into gloom before a response is possible.
- Considered a persistent and universally unwelcome urban nuisance, their screeches, scrapes, and wing-rustle a constant feature of inhabited settlements.
