Veyran

Veyran

The Veyran is a massive bipedal predator standing 320 to 340 cm at the withers, broad-chested with immense clawed arms and a body covered in coarse needle feather along the spine and shoulders over fine leathery scaled skin in dark earth tones and jungle green. Apex predator of the dense southern jungles and steamy floodplains south of Baramma Place Baramma The great jungle island east of Tarkdaara, separated from the mainland by the Bram Sea and home to the Bar., it forms stable bonded herds of 15 to 20 adults and is almost never challenged in the wild. Only the Meirs, with their deep natural sensitivity and months of patient training, are capable of forming a true bond with one.

Key traits

  • The feather crest raises along the spine and shoulders to signal threat, anger, or excitement, making a Veyran's emotional state readable at a distance.
  • Capable of understanding simple arithmetic, gesture-based commands, and limited words under proper training, a level of intelligence that makes it as much a partner as a mount.
  • Once bonded to a rider, a Veyran is intensely loyal, to the point of attacking bystanders who merely argue or move too sharply in its presence.
  • If separated from a bonded rider, a captive Veyran typically declines and dies within a year from what observers describe as silent grief.
  • Exclusively ridden by Meirs, who speak of Veyrans as partners rather than property; to mistreat one is to invite death as surely as drawing steel on family.
  • Feathers of fallen Veyrans are woven into ritual jewellery and sacred tools, and the Meirs regard each loss as a death in the kinship circle.
